Offering hair to the Lord, a vow that many families keep.

A vow kept

Our son's first tonsure

We offered our son's first hair at Tirumala when he was one. He cried for a minute and then slept on his father's shoulder. Our grandmother said the Lord takes away ego with the hair. Most families we meet have a story like this.

Tonsure at Tirumala is done at Kalyanakatta. It is a service by TTD, done by trained barbers. Plan it before darshan.

Quick answer: Kalyana Katta in Tirumala is where devotees offer hair (tonsure) to Lord Venkateswara. The main Kalyanakatta near the temple and many mini Kalyanakattas near the cottages work from early morning to late night. The service is free, with a new blade for every devotee.

The meaning

Why families keep the hair offering vow

For many families the hair offering is a promise made at home in a hard time. A child was unwell, an exam result was awaited, a job was needed. When the prayer is answered, the family comes to Tirumala and offers hair as thanks.

Our elders say hair stands for pride and beauty, and giving it up shows surrender to the Lord. Men, women and children all take part. For many babies it is the first tonsure, done in front of the whole family.

After the offering, a bath and fresh clothes, the darshan feels lighter. Plan it early in the day so you have time for the queue after.
